Actor Jimmy Vee will be taking over the role of R2-D2 following the death of Kenny Baker, who had been synonymous since the droid's screen debut in 1977.  The announcement came via the Oh So Small talent agency's social media accounts.

Oh So Small made the following post on their Facebook page on February 13th.

"In 2014, we began to assist Disney & LucasFilm with the casting of various actors & creature performers in the Star Wars franchise. Three years later, we're thrilled to announce that 'OhSoSmall' actor Jimmy Vee is the new R2-D2!"

The following press release was published on the production company's website.

"We’re proud to officially announce that our client Mr Jimmy Vee has taken over the role of the Star Wars droid ‘R2-D2’, originally played by iconic actor, Mr. Kenny Baker.

Jimmy says, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the ‘tricks’ on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honour. I’m so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working so hard on for the last yearJimmy is no stranger to the world of Film and Television having previously starred in Doctor Who & the Harry Potter movies.

We’d like to specifically thank Disney and LucasFilm ltd. for providing Jimmy with this opportunity and look forward to working with the team in the near future."

Jimmy will make his first appearance as the character in the highly anticipated Episode VIII 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi"

Baker is credited as "R2-D2 Consultant" and Vee has an uncredited role as R2-D2 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Vee has also appeared in such filsm as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Pan.

Joining the returning cast members from The Force Awakens are newcomers Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI is scheduled for release December 15, 2017.
